SATURDAY- August 9th, 2014 "Things Just Got Real!" The Den: LOG OFF NOW!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2013/USA/UR/Horror
"A young woman studying the habits of webcam chat users from the apparent
safety of her apartment witnesses a brutal murder online and is quickly
immersed in a nightmare in which she and her loved ones are targeted
for the same grisly fate as the first victim." ~ The Den (2013)
HQ Thoughts:
"Film is full with twists and turns with an ending that was unexpected and well thought out. I noticed a few reviews where some people weren't satisfied with the way this first person, live feed horror was executed but for a directorial debut- this was great!
ElizabethB is doing a study for her college that will require her to spend her waking moments on a website called The Den, where randoms are connected for chat and you never really know what you're going to get.
While working with her professors and friends on her thesis, she begins to run into some strange characters that immediately begin to raise eyebrows but as long as you're behind the screen- you're safe right? RIGHT?
Well, let's just say the people around her are slowly but surely getting hacked (no pun intended) and she starts experiencing a serious stalker issue after viewing what she believes to be a young girl getting murdered on live feed. She tries to get cops involved but the internet proves to be one big wide free ride of deviance and full of crazies. This gave me Megan Is Missing (peep the review) for the most part but the outcome made this film one hell of an entertaining and questionable movie. At the end, I couldn't help but repeat that I liked that! It was entertaining and I know you guys would enjoy on a late night."
SATURDAY- August 2nd, 2014 "Be careful and act stupid!" Banshee Chapter: You Just Don't Question Your Government, DUH!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2013/USA-German/UR/Horror
"Journalist Anne Roland explores the disturbing links behind her friend's
sudden disappearance, an ominous government research chemical, and a
disturbing radio broadcast of unknown origin." ~ Banshee Chapter (2013)
HQ Thoughts:
"WHAT A TRIP? I definitely went into this one blind enough to have to watch it twice. Might even make someone else watch it with me for a reason to see it again. It was great!
Anne Roland had a friend disappear rather unceremoniously after having a bad 'reaction' to a secret drug concoction created by none other than the ever so secret CIA.
In first person, we get to see the video with the last recorded remnants of her friend which features a shortwave radio, some crazy weird counting and a music box- I almost lost it! It took me out of character, my TV was on high and I just wasn't ready! I have a thing about voices, music, etc. I was definitely a target audience for this film. lol
She then takes it upon herself to begin doing some digging around that led her to Thomas Blackburn, a connoisseur of government conspiracies and such, and he takes her all the way left where she ends up coming face to face with the horror that it all really is. WOW!
Now, this film is based on true events; the MK-Ultra project which is a well renowned piece of the good ol' US of A history and unfortunately (or fortunately, if you've seen this film) they haven't made the screwed up, deviant, blatantly psychotic details public.
Upon my finishing of this very disturbed and creepy film. I commenced to sleeping with my TV on low just for a little light. I am not that easily swayed but this was original and scary. Give it a shot!"
TUESDAY- July 29th, 2014 "Her Milkshake Bought Him To The...?!" Haunt: Yay To Creepy Love Stories!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2013/USA/UR/Horror
"An introvert teen befriends his new neighbor, and together the couple
begin to explore the haunted house that his family has just purchased." ~ Haunt (2013)
HQ Thoughts:
"Boy meets girl with some pretty good horrific moments. A bit slow but I
think worth the watch on a late night. Definitely going to get a few
scares out of it!
Evan
is sad because his family moved out of the city into a slow paced
wooded area. The house is said to be haunted, so of course the parents
took it on a good deal.
He
eventually began to roam around the newly purchased premises and finds a girl (amazingly) sitting in the woods. Decisions here makes the film what is because I do believe any person in their 'right' mind would have just left it all alone- yet we will give him a pass for living in the boonies!
I just want to get a few PERSONAL concerns out about
her before I move on. WHY IS SHE SO DAMN RUDE? (you'll see what I mean...)
She gets a LOT comfortable right away and they
both start to look through the house to find a spirit communicator that
works, and the good stuff begins. As hard as I tried to figure out the twist- I will say that this one stumped me until the very end...
This film is basically a
horror/love story due to the character attachment you tend to inadvertently build as the film moves along. I actually enjoyed it for what
it's worth.
I caught myself talking a lot at the screen and the ending left me stumped and mad and Grrr! Let's just say that. I think it's worth a watch. Not a bad film
but could have definitely been better executed."
SUNDAY- June 29th, 2014 "By Any Means Necessary!" Dream Home: Didn't Expect This - JUST WOW???!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2010/Tokyo/UR/Horror
"Cheng Li-sheung is a young, upwardly mobile professional finally ready
to invest in her first home. But when the deal falls through, she is
forced to keep her dream alive - even if it means keeping her would-be
neighbors dead." ~ Dream Home (2010)
HQ Thoughts:
"This film does not automatically give you gruesome until you understand the plight of the protagonist in this film. Cheng is looking for a new home where big is better.
She makes her rounds looking for a good deal and when she finds the seller- she does whatever she can to maintain that connection, even when it means to knock out the competition and BOY does she. Unfortunately, she loses out and eventually loses her mind. This is CRAZY!
My focus on this film is the sheer brutality and utter realness of the deaths that are beyond my wildest imagination. Nobody is safe around this fairly normal (looking) serial killer of a woman who doesn't have the slightest inkling of remorse for what she eventually does to get what she wants.
I CANNOT STRESS THE BRUTALITY ENOUGH!- If you are into murder, long visuals with nothing left to imagination then this is DEFINITELY the film for you. Gore galore. I don't know what else to say besides that this definitely will remain on my WTF list for a very long time. Great gore fest and a lesson well learned."
SUNDAY- May 11th, 2014 "Help Me.. Help You...Inadvertently That Is" Right At Your Door: THOUGHT YOU WERE SAFE, HUH???!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2006/UK/R/Horror
"A dirty bomb goes off in Los Angeles, jamming freeways and spreading a toxic cloud." ~ Right At Your Door (2006)
HQ Thoughts:
"YES! I actually think this was an effective apocalypse film based in Los Angeles, CA. It follows a man named Brad who is waiting for his wife, Lexi to return from a day of work. While waiting, he starts to hear reports of an attack that resulted in a dirty bomb being detonated and all hell breaks lose.
With a desperate attempt to get downtown to find her, he quickly realizes the town is getting shut down quickly and 'contamination' could result in the authorities taking extreme action.
This film gives more of a reclusive fell as there are only 4 characters in the film that is worth caring about. Brad has to make some life changing choices as he tries to protect the little bit of life he has left.
Truly an unsettling experience for me, just can't accept the idea of martial law- ever. (EVER!) The ending is definitely NOT what you would expect which made me appreciate this film even more. Good Watch!"
FRIDAY- September 6th, 2013 "Let Me Help You..." The Human Centipede (First Sequence)- Wrong Experiment Gone Right?!: (Title LINK is in English) 2009/Dutch/R/Horror
"A mad scientist kidnaps and mutilates a trio of tourists in order to
reassemble them into a new "pet"-- a human centipede, created by
stitching their mouths to each others' rectums."~ Human Centipede- First Sequence (2009)
HQ Thoughts:
"Time has passed since this film was deemed the first of it's kind to explore such a macabre scientific 'what if '. Now that the Final Sequence is coming upon us, I thought that maybe we could revisit the beginning of a franchise that is sure to make your stomach curdle.
Everyone that I took the time to watch this with (and I've seen it plenty) they all seem to be mad at the fact that this movie is so sick and disgusting. I'm usually shocked because the beauty of this film is that there is little to absolutely NO GORE in this film. Just the idea. Sounds, medical visuals and an outcome of success is all you get and it's enough to make you squirm.
2 girls are unfortunate enough to have their car break down in Dr. Heiter's backyard and are invited in, in effort to help... or so we think. They are led to a makeshift basement where a Japanese man was already being held captive and the horrors begin there.
Dr. Heiter doesn't fall short on the dialogue, where in some cases he creates a sense of disgust while explaining jovially his intentions to create a human centipede attached via gastric systems. WTF???
There are some gems here like "FEEED HIM!" and "Now I Will Make You The Middle Piece" that tend to spearhead some of my inside jokes.... O man you will see what I mean. I adore this original and hear that the 2 set to follow suit (Full Sequence is out already, Final is said to be ready by 2014) are gory and beyond the limits of this. We shall see."
FRIDAY- August 30th, 2013 "Showing Appreciation..." Trick 'r Treat: Let Them All Have Candy!?: (Title LINK is English) 2007/USA/R/Horror
"Four interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school
principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might
have just met the one guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean
prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her
holiday-obsessed husband. " ~ Trick 'r Treat (2007)
HQ Thoughts:
"I wonder what I was doing when this film came out because I never heard of it until recently. What a pleasure; it was funny, bloody and very well laid out focusing on everyone in a small Ohio town as they come together for Halloween to put on a serious celebration.
We manage to follow a few town folk who seem to hide very deep secrets and somehow they are all connected one way or another. Serial killers, vampires, werewolves and other Halloween faves are included in this movie that is absolutely ideal for those who enjoy a good cliche every now and then.
The story set up in a way to make you keep mind of all characters which makes for a surprising and satisfying ending. It didn't disappoint."
FRIDAY- August 23rd, 2013 "Don't Touch, Not Yours..." V/H/S: What You See Is What You Get!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2012/USA/R/Horror
"When a group of misfits is hired by an unknown third party to burglarize
a desolate house and acquire a rare VHS tape, they discover more found
footage than they bargained for." ~ V/H/S (2012)
HQ Thoughts:
"How cool?! A film involving my overall fave concept- The Anthology! 5 short stories wrapped in one with a creepy overtone that will most likely make you watch with the lights on. I didn't because it was day time... But anyways! (lol) Yet again, this is another film with found footage which can be a hit or miss with many titles to name.
I think the idea of having young bandits running around trying to make a quick buck get their paybacks doing something that they apparently love- being violent, is a great touch however, the movies have nothing to do with the big picture...
The videos are clearly disturbing and so sketchy that you really start to feel like you're watching a few horrible home movies... Even though the overall idea wasn't completely clear at the end for me, I must say that I enjoyed this to say the least and I hear that there is that sequel. :)"
SATURDAY- August 17th, 2013 "Flying Off The Handle." Quarantine 2-Terminal: Trouble on the Tarmac!: (Title LINK is English) 2011/USA/R/Horror
"A plane is taken over by a mysterious virus. When the plane lands it is
placed under quarantine. Now a group of survivors must band together to
survive the quarantine." ~ Quarantine 2- Terminal (2011)
HQ Thoughts:
"NOT BAD! Of course, without following up with the concept of Quarantine and the unrelenting ending- 1 could only wonder where could they go from here? Well, to an airport apparently and it's pretty entertaining considering it's fast paced action.
Man gets bit, man gets sick.... Man is on plane so there is really nowhere to go but up.... uhhh. Yea. The flight attendants have the daunting task to make sure that everyone is accounted for until things got really bad and the man (who is portrayed as morbidly obese) is extremely difficult to manage.
With the amount of actors in the movie, you can pretty much prepare yourself for folks to get knocked off 1 by 1. That is the obvious premise because the story has been told before, so no need to wonder "how did this happen?"...
O yea, they do include a cute piece of dialogue that does implicate 1 of the characters' connection with the first film but again, can not be elaborated on- just see if you can catch it. Enjoyable for a night watch."
WEDNESDAY- August 14th, 2013 "Keep It Going For As Long..."
Pontypool: Can You HEAR What's HAPPENING?!: (Title LINK is English) 2008/Canada/R/Horror
"A psychological thriller in which a deadly virus infects a small Ontario town." ~ Pontypool (2008)
HQ Thoughts:
"I watched this and didn't like it the first time around, so I watched it again and found an appreciation for what the director was aiming to do. Since I have watched all types of horror for years, this didn't come quite as a shock to me as it did others who claim this movie is the best they've ever seen... Trust me it isn't BUT it's also entertaining enough to get through and enjoy for what it's worth.
Grant is a shady radio show host who apparently landed a gig at a station way out of norm for him. Their normal positive day goes awry when reports of protests of some sort were taking place in front of a Dr's office and murders begin to be carried out.
Amazingly, this entire movie takes place inside of the radio station with callers reporting what they saw and a complete narration happening from within. With minimal view of anything that is happening, the movie has a way of creating a creepy, tense atmosphere.
Ultimately, this is a zombie film sans the zombies eating brains, attacking and doing what they do best and the transference of the virus is what got me to thinking... ARE WE ALL ZOMBIES? lol"
WEDNESDAY- August 7th, 2013 "Adoption. Maybe? No, OK"
Inside: No Happy Endings!: (Title LINK is English subtitles) 2007/French/R/Horror
"Four months after the death of her husband, a woman on the brink of
motherhood is tormented in her home by a strange woman who wants her
unborn baby." ~ House at the End of the Street (2012)
HQ Thoughts:
"Also known as "A l'interieur", this film goes to every length to make it as uneasy and uncomfortable as possible while trying to make it through. Never have I witnessed a movie as such, involving women. This is extremely violent, brutal and simply vicious- NONSTOP!
Society has always had a thing for 'protecting' pregnant women, and if you are
1 of those sensitive folks.. This movie is NOT for you. Having been in a car accident that kills her husband during her pregnancy, Sarah goes through a serious battle of depression and is trying to take it as easy as possible before the birth of her baby.Things take a bad turn almost immediately after she gets a knock at the door only to find a woman (The Woman) is at her door.
The brutality was a hard one to sit through because I just had a baby myself, HOWEVER I am a tough cookie and this movie has NO fucking happy endings in sight!!! Again, the lengths to which The Woman goes to get her form of vengeance is relentless and I definitely wasn't expecting the
outcome. Gave me the chills!
Watch it and take it for what it's worth because everyone- the baby, the mom, YOU will suffer. You won't be able to shake the visuals for a while."
1408: Do You Believe NOW?!: (Title LINK is in English) 2007/USA/PG-13/Horror
"A man who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences checks into
the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel. Soon after settling in, he
confronts genuine terror. " ~ 1408 (2007)
HQ Thoughts:
"If any justice can be done to a Stephen King short- this would be it. Took me a while to watch it because I'm simply not that interested in the American mainstream horror film but on a boring weekend night, I managed to watch it and was quite surprised!
Mike is a paranormal investigator who makes a living going out and finding some way to debunk peoples' ghost experiences until he is given a task to go and stay in the Dolphin hotel in NYC over night. He was specifically told to stay in a room 1408- where apparently people kill themselves before seeing the light of day. Seems easy enough until after he settles in.
The set-up is one room for a majority of the film which is true Stephen King claustrophobia style. Mike starts to feel the effects of this solitary experience and tries to curb his clearly growing anxiety with alcohol and a little TV. Gradually, things start to get really screwed up and he is faced with so many of his own demons that he starts to lose it.
This movie takes you there and back- literally. Check it out- keeps you guessing until the end. "
