"Things That Go Bump" by R. Michael McWhorter: Delightful Twist!
(Title LINK is English) 2014/USA/UR/Horror
HORROR SHORT Summary:
THINGS THAT GO BUMP
--
After a long day of moving Megan prepares for her first nights sleep in
her new apartment; unaware this place houses a dark secret. Now all that
stands between her and a living nightmare is a solitary beam of light.
"What fun! Visually slick with a delightful twist. Well done!" - Clive Barker after watching "Things That Go Bump"
HQ Thoughts:
"Well, that was a pleasant surprise! R. Michael McWhorter of Tizzy
Entertainment gave Weekend Horror the pleasure to present his short
horror- Things That Go Bump for our audience to view and trust me when I say it has an awesome twist!
Horror
shorts are a specialty in their own right only because the goal is to
capture all of the elements of fear and/or disgust in a very short
period of time and with a limited amount of dialogue. TTGB caught every
bit of that including a bit of comedy and executed it amazingly!
As
the summary states; Megan just moved into her own home and almost
immediately she is bothered by a night demon that has something coming
for him... Just watch!
We want to thank Mr. McWhorter & Tizzy Ent. for sharing!"
TUESDAY- July 29th, 2014 "Her Milkshake Bought Him To The...?!" Haunt: Yay To Creepy Love Stories!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2013/USA/UR/Horror
"An introvert teen befriends his new neighbor, and together the couple
begin to explore the haunted house that his family has just purchased." ~ Haunt (2013)
HQ Thoughts:
"Boy meets girl with some pretty good horrific moments. A bit slow but I
think worth the watch on a late night. Definitely going to get a few
scares out of it!
Evan
is sad because his family moved out of the city into a slow paced
wooded area. The house is said to be haunted, so of course the parents
took it on a good deal.
He
eventually began to roam around the newly purchased premises and finds a girl (amazingly) sitting in the woods. Decisions here makes the film what is because I do believe any person in their 'right' mind would have just left it all alone- yet we will give him a pass for living in the boonies!
I just want to get a few PERSONAL concerns out about
her before I move on. WHY IS SHE SO DAMN RUDE? (you'll see what I mean...)
She gets a LOT comfortable right away and they
both start to look through the house to find a spirit communicator that
works, and the good stuff begins. As hard as I tried to figure out the twist- I will say that this one stumped me until the very end...
This film is basically a
horror/love story due to the character attachment you tend to inadvertently build as the film moves along. I actually enjoyed it for what
it's worth.
I caught myself talking a lot at the screen and the ending left me stumped and mad and Grrr! Let's just say that. I think it's worth a watch. Not a bad film
but could have definitely been better executed."
SUNDAY- September 1st, 2013 "Holy Cow..." Master of Horror-Cigarette Burns: Trust, It's Still Around...: (Title LINK is in English) 2005/USA/R/Horror
"With a torrid past that haunts him, a movie-theater director is hired to
hunt for the only known print of a film so notorious that its single
screening caused the viewers to become homicidically insane."~ Masters of Horror- Cigarette Burns (2005)
HQ Thoughts: "Classic Carpenter. This film is based on one of his many short stories and luckily was turned into a visually aesthetic horror masterpiece. I absolutely love this. Kirby is a researcher/theater owner who does small programmer jobs for money to help pay back his debts. He gets a lead to a film collector who is looking for a one of a kind film titled "Le Fin Absolue du Monde" which roughly translates to "The Absolute End of the World" where I can't even begin to tell you what is on it and what happens when you watch it but I assure you, Mr. Carpenter didn't fall short with the creepiness.
Considering this is a 55 minute story, the twists and turns takes you down a spiral that makes you feel like you are watching a full length film. Not only that, it's superbly done and the ending is to die for! Did I mention that I absolutely LOVE THIS?!"
WEDNESDAY- August 21st, 2013 "Survival Is Worth Trying..." Frontieres: What Is The World Coming To? Oh, This!: (Title LINK is English subtitles) 2007/France/R/Horror
"A gang of young thieves flee Paris during the violent aftermath of a
political election, only to hole up at an Inn run by neo-Nazis." ~ Frontieres (2007)
HQ Thoughts:
"Had I seen this before the Hostel films started to take effect, this probably would have blown my mind to smithereens but because I got a wind of this only a few years ago- I was late finding out that somewhere in the world, torture films were being done very right and the back story is what is scariest of them all.
A group of friends are running away from political unrest, martial law, the government is no more and the idea of survival is what becomes the main concept. After taking refuge in what seems to be a friendly inn turns out to be a torture chamber for a family of cannibals that heil Hitler. I couldn't believe it....
The next HOUR is a complete gore fest. Ridiculously brutal with a few moments of "hope". That isn't long lived in a film of this caliber- meant to tarnish your senses with very wrong acts of violence and murder.
This is 1 of the few that I own at home and I watch it often because it is just that good.... Not a disappointment if you haven't seen it yet!"
*TUESDAY SHORT* Fear Itself: Spooked!- The Past Catches Up!: (Title LINK is English) 2008/Canada/R/Horror
"Harry Seigal is a private investigator who, several years earlier, was
dismissed from the police force after accidentally killing a suspect
during interrogation." ~ Fear Itself- Spooked (2008)
HQ Thoughts:
"Regardless of what the masses say, this has to easily be one of my favorite shorts from the "Fear Itself" series. I was ecstatic when it came out because I am a HUGE fan of short horror stories of any kind and this was short lived but fun while it lasted.
"Spooked" tells the story of a former police officer named Harry, who had a history of aggression and violence that lead to the eventual killing of a suspect while in his custody. He loses everything including his job and fast forward 15yrs, he is now a private investigator who was put to task by a woman who is trying to see if her husband is cheating while she is gone. A far cry from normal police work. The house that he has to stake out in is old and dilapidated and he sets up in the upstairs room, in the dark. The madness starts soon after. We find out what makes him tick, what makes him squirm and go crazy as he revisits the core of everything that is causing his ultimate issue. Pretty screwed up. I don't think this episode disappoints at all and there was some pretty good acting as well. Eric Roberts owned this role.
WEDNESDAY- July 17th, 2013 "It's almost over. Really."
Alexandra's Project: Get ready for your mind to be BLOWN!: (Title LINK is in English) 2003/Australia/R/Horror
"A regular suburban family man comes home from work on his birthday to
find a deserted house and a videotape waiting to be played... " ~ Alexandra's Project (2003)
HQ Thoughts:
"FYI - THIS IS A RARE NO GORE ALERT!!!
I really wanted to feature this film because it truly does offer another spectrum of what horror can be considered, depending on who you are dealing with. This film doesn't disappoint on a psych-level, pure mind-fuckery that is as original as it is disturbing. Alexandra is a wife and mother in a typical family that seems happy on the outside but clearly this woman has her own set of issues that are on the verge of eruption in this film. While celebrating her husbands' birthday, she comes up with what she believes is the most thought-provoking gift a man could ever get.
She sets up a video for hubby, who comes home ready for a surprise party- only to come home to darkness, his TV and the VHS tape. Everything starts off interesting and gets real as things go along. Take note of the drastic change in his demeanor as yours tend to take turns with him. Let your mind go and get into this film. I'm sure by the end you will be sitting with your mouth hanging open trying to figure out what you just witnessed. Again, no gore but one hell of a psychological horror that I think deserves to make horror film listings."

"Revised- Revisited" Martyrs: Dying for a cause?: (Title LINK is in English dubbed) 2008/France/R/Horror
"A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and
tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of
child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity. " ~ Martyrs (2008)
HQ Thoughts:
"I ran across this awesome film after a brief word of mouth recommendation that I am happy I didn't pass up. This is one hell of a ride that starts off immediately with a young girl escaping what seems to be a dungeon of some sort. She is beat to the core and so mentally fucked that she barely talks or interacts normally.
She meets a best friend... they grow up and pretty much protect each other until her demons get the best of her and she goes out for her own form of revenge. And that is just the first 20 mins!!!
What happens after, not even the most seasoned horror buff can imagine!
Brutal isn't the word, scenes literally had me holding my breath. This film is original, super twisted and takes you to a new plateau of horror. Fast paced and excellent until the end."
Old Boy: He did what?!: (Title LINK is in S.Korean w/ English subtitles) 2003/R/Horror
"After being kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must find his captor in 5 days. " ~ Old Boy (2003)
HQ Thoughts:
"Classic. Puts the horror in horrible and Asians know how to do it! WOW
Oh Dae-Su was held captive after being kidnapped one day from a police station. We have no clue why and neither does he but he is kept hostage for the next 15 years, not to mention that he is fed and pretty much kept isolated with only a facade of an apartment and a television.
He learns as time winds down that he has the opportunity to find who has done this to him, because they basically ruined his entire life, including his family. The obviously pissed and bitter captors give this guy 5 days and Oh Dae-Su uses everything that he learned from TV to inflict the most pain as he tries to find his new meaning in life. Pay attention is all I can recommend because the visual is amazing.
Oh yea and Spike Lee is remaking it this year to my greatest disappointment."
FRIDAY- June 21st, 2013 "Still studying death. Pardon me."
MAMA: This love is unconditional, well sort of: (Title LINK is in English) 2013/PG-13/Horror/Urban Legend
"Annabel and Lucas are faced with the challenge of raising his young
nieces that were left alone in the forest for 5 years.... but how alone
were they? " ~ MAMA (2013)
HQ Thoughts: "This movie is fairly new but I must say that I enjoyed this Del Toro flick immensely. Took me back to a time when you could 1) crawl under the covers and 2) actually expect real scares and "wtf was that?" moments.
This story begins pretty fast paced. You get the gist almost right away and what happens going forward is up in the air if it's a first time watch for you. 2 children whose parents are gone are kidnapped (apparently) and found feral after years of fending for themselves. A distant family member takes them in and eventually realizes that the children have a strong bond with their MAMA. Whoever she may be. Must watch! (at least once)"
