MONDAY- May 26th, 2014 "Stop It, That's Just GROSS!" Slither: EWWWWWW???!!!: (Title LINK is English) 2006/UK/R/Horror
"A small town is taken over by an alien plague, turning residents into zombies and all forms of mutant monsters." ~ Slither (2006)
HQ Thoughts:
"Just disgusting. This is a hilarious take on a B movie with a huge focus on funny.
A small town gets hit with a meteorite which releases these little worms like creatures which invades the human body and mutates them into a zombie (but violent/hungry) state.
There are no shortcuts taken here with the directors hitting it right on the mark with the most vile visuals that are bound to interrupt the senses. Zombies are my absolute fave (as mentioned in previous posts) and this movie touched my heart! It definitely doesn't fail to disappoint.
If you can sit through this without wondering WTF a few times, along with some O GOSH(s) down the line, then you are not normal but this will go down in cult history- worth a few watches for sure. I love this film!"
SUNDAY- November 24th, 2013 "Til this thing called Death rips us apart."
[REC] 3- Genesis: A Marriage Made In Hell!: (Title LINK is English) 2012/Spain/R/Horror
"A couple's wedding day turns horrific as some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness." ~ [REC] 3- Genesis (2012)
HQ Thoughts:
"I love zombies, can't get enough of them. The [REC] series has failed to disappoint me since I saw the first installment which was a splitting (yet way more entertaining) version of Quarantine.
Clara and Koldo start off the day with a beautiful family get together as they celebrate their marriage. Things quickly go sour after someone turns up very sick and it spreads super quick.
Nothing too shocking here except for the awesome gore, murder sequences and a killer ending. I absolutely enjoyed since it is fast paced and the subtitles make it even more intriguing (for me, at least).
Here you go for a zombie spin, enjoy! Waiting on the 4th installment of this, can't wait to post!"
FRIDAY- August 9th, 2013 "Fasting." Dumplings: Beauty Aide to the NEXT Level!: (Title LINK is English subtitles) 2004/Hong Kong/NR/Horror
"In Hong Kong, Aunt Mei is a cook famous for her home-made rejuvenation
dumplings, based on a millenarian recipe prepared with a mysterious
ingredient that she brings directly from China.." ~ Dumplings (2004)
HQ Thoughts:
"This film is an extension of a short film that was originally featured as part of Three Extremes of the same name, where Mrs. Li meets Aunt Mei, a (very old- so she says) woman that was able to offer her a life rejuvenating recipe that should help her gain the interest of her husband again.
Things are not living up to Mrs. Li's expectations and she requests more potent ingredients. This is when the film gets a bit unsavory. It's not until complications arise from an obvious BAD batch of dumplings and she realizes that she needs to be more consistent with the food and what happens after Ant Mei cuts her off, makes you wonder about the need for women to 'keep' their man at any cost.
Mrs. Li reaches her boiling point and goes to whatever length she needs to in order to keep up her new regimen. The twists in this film doesn't top the nasty taste it leaves in your mouth when the film is over. Let's just say; OMG, that was something ELSE!"
Gothika: The Ultimate Cover-Up!: (Title LINK is English) 2003/US/R/Horror
"Ghost story in which a repressed female psychiatrist wakes up as a
patient in the very asylum where she worked with no memory of why she is
there and what she has done." ~ Gothika (2003)
HQ Thoughts:
"Halle has played everything from a drug addict to CatWoman but in this film, she is a criminal psych who mysteriously wakes up in a cell in her own ward after blacking out one day at home. When she wakes up, she realizes that she is the Numero Uno suspect in the brutal hacking death of her husband, another prominent figure in this small town.
The story is super dark with the likes of Robert Downey Jr. reversing his role and taking her on as his client to further try to find out why she took the hatchet to her husband. Halle gives a believable psychotic trip as she tries to maintain her real sanity while being tormented by a twisted ghost who seems to be trying to tell her something.
Clean, sharp movie with decent twists that are well written. Goes to show you how it's all in who you know. Good watch!"
The Caller: What exactly is happening here?!: (Title LINK is English) 2011/Puerto Rico/R/Horror
"Troubled divorcee Mary Kee is tormented by a series of sinister phone
calls from a mysterious woman. When the stranger reveals she's calling
from the past, Mary tries to break off contact. But the caller doesn't
like being ignored, and looks for revenge in a unique and terrifying
way... " ~ The Caller (2011)
HQ Thoughts:
"Well, what a pleasant surprise. You probably won't find this movie online with the best ratings because I'm guaranteeing that they probably didn't understand what they just saw therefore passing it off as a "bad" film. Hell, even I had to think about it for about an hour after watching it, it's just that cerebral with a fair bit of blood and fright.
Mary is in the middle of a divorce from a nasty, abusive husband and she moves back to Puerto Rico (the entire film was shot there) to start a new life. She manages to go back to school, meet a new male friend and oh yea, can't forget the crazy lady that calls constantly!!!
The calls turn out to be a lot more than expected when whatever directives Rose (the caller) gives over the phone apparently affects the current future, which seems to work in Mary's favor a little later on. Mary does whatever she can not to make her mad but once you learn the back story, you will understand how it all ties in.
This movie is one hell of an ingenious trip, just because it didn't get mass promotion and theater play, I would still agree that this director did a hell of a job making a simple concept as deep and scary as he managed to do with this. I love dark movies about psychosis. Good watch."
WEDNESDAY- July 17th, 2013 "It's almost over. Really."
Alexandra's Project: Get ready for your mind to be BLOWN!: (Title LINK is in English) 2003/Australia/R/Horror
"A regular suburban family man comes home from work on his birthday to
find a deserted house and a videotape waiting to be played... " ~ Alexandra's Project (2003)
HQ Thoughts:
"FYI - THIS IS A RARE NO GORE ALERT!!!
I really wanted to feature this film because it truly does offer another spectrum of what horror can be considered, depending on who you are dealing with. This film doesn't disappoint on a psych-level, pure mind-fuckery that is as original as it is disturbing. Alexandra is a wife and mother in a typical family that seems happy on the outside but clearly this woman has her own set of issues that are on the verge of eruption in this film. While celebrating her husbands' birthday, she comes up with what she believes is the most thought-provoking gift a man could ever get.
She sets up a video for hubby, who comes home ready for a surprise party- only to come home to darkness, his TV and the VHS tape. Everything starts off interesting and gets real as things go along. Take note of the drastic change in his demeanor as yours tend to take turns with him. Let your mind go and get into this film. I'm sure by the end you will be sitting with your mouth hanging open trying to figure out what you just witnessed. Again, no gore but one hell of a psychological horror that I think deserves to make horror film listings."
