SATURDAY- August 24th, 2013 "Overlooked..." Sinister: But He Did Everything Right, Right?!: (Title LINK is English) 2012/USA/R/Horror
""A true-crime writer finds a cache of 8mm home movies films that suggest
the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer
whose career dates back to the 1960s." ~ Sinister (2012)
HQ Thoughts:
"I've had first hand access to this movie for over a year and boy am I kicking myself right now... This movie was GREAT! I liked it so much that I feel like putting on a Sinister mask for Halloween (not ruled out just yet- with a girly touch of course.)
Wow, what a dark, tense film with all types of unexpected frights that made me scream an honest scream. Ethan Hawke plays a crime writer named Ellison who apparently travels to crime scenes (or near them, w/ his family) to do his own investigative reporting on the murders. He comes to a town where a murder of the Stevenson family captured tons of traction then suddenly went cold with the littlest victim gone missing. When Ellison moves into the home and looks around, he finds a stash of home movies that are bound to make you go WTF?! I sure did. His intent is to write and publish a book as he has done before with new facts and details. What Ellison didn't know
was that he was in for a ridiculously wild ride while uncovering the
real reasoning behind the 8mm films. I surely plan on owning this one, watching it periodically to set the bar again and again for other films to follow. I truly loved this movie! 10/10 on my non-existent rating system. :)"
Gothika: The Ultimate Cover-Up!: (Title LINK is English) 2003/US/R/Horror
"Ghost story in which a repressed female psychiatrist wakes up as a
patient in the very asylum where she worked with no memory of why she is
there and what she has done." ~ Gothika (2003)
HQ Thoughts:
"Halle has played everything from a drug addict to CatWoman but in this film, she is a criminal psych who mysteriously wakes up in a cell in her own ward after blacking out one day at home. When she wakes up, she realizes that she is the Numero Uno suspect in the brutal hacking death of her husband, another prominent figure in this small town.
The story is super dark with the likes of Robert Downey Jr. reversing his role and taking her on as his client to further try to find out why she took the hatchet to her husband. Halle gives a believable psychotic trip as she tries to maintain her real sanity while being tormented by a twisted ghost who seems to be trying to tell her something.
Clean, sharp movie with decent twists that are well written. Goes to show you how it's all in who you know. Good watch!"
